Sugarcreek studio and gallery inspires artists and lovers of art
Bye Bye Blue Studio and Gallery in Sugarcreek is for artists and for lovers of art. It is for students and teachers. It is for residents and for visitors passing through and those who choose to stay a while. It is unlike any other business in the community and it has just recently opened its doors.
Housed in the lower level of the completely renovated 1850 structure also home to the Honey Bee Café, another soon-to-open business new to the area, Bye Bye Blue is open limited hours Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with extended hours coming in July. “We want to spend the first month getting used to our space,” said owner Rachel Leach. Original exposed stone and barn beams complement the modern lines that have come with the building’s restoration. Bye Bye Blue offers opportunities for artists to show and sell their work. There are also opportunities to teach classes so others in the community can learn a new skill or improve upon a current skill. Classes are open to the public and are for students of all skill levels and of all ages, including children. Two glass fusing classes Saturday May 31 were inaugural events for the young studio and gallery. Taught by Avon, Ohio artist Sheree Ferrato, students learned how to design, make and fuse a glass pendant. Upcoming classes include a photography class June 7 at 9:45 a.m. taught by Kenny Coblentz who dares students to go beyond the auto setting on their cameras in this class for students age 10 and up. Immediately following that class, students can join Coblentz for a photo-taking walk in downtown Sugarcreek. The walk begins at 11 a.m. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Students are not required to take the first class to participate in the walk. Megan Summers will teach a pen and ink press class for students ages 8-13 June 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Supplies are included. Experienced artists will benefit from a four-hour workshop June 28 at with accomplished artist Jana Volmer. “Cut to the Chase with Charcoal” is open to students over the age of 16 and aims to assist artists with drawing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface most efficiently. The workshop begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. Students can bring lunch and break from noon until 1 p.m. Originally from the Akron area, Leach was anxious to leave urban life behind but not the cultural opportunities it offered. “We were ready to leave the city and we liked Sugarcreek very much,” said Leach. “As a substitute teacher in the Garaway system, I realized there was a need for more art. The studio and gallery are to supplement the community with more art.” Leach said she has been interested in art since she was able to hold a crayon. She works in pencil, pen, ink, and photography but not exclusively. Her original work as well as the work of the more than 20 artists she represents is available for purchase in the gallery. Bye Bye Blue Art Studio and Gallery is located at 993 W. Main Street, Sugarcreek.
